One of the top questions I receive from people looking to get in the storage auction business is:Do I need a pickup truck to get started in the Storage Auction business? The answer is no. Of course owning a pickup truck doesn’t hurt and may make your job easier. It is not a requirement for success. You have a couple of options, the first of which is to simply rent a truck when needed. You can usually rent a small moving truck or van for $20 a day, plus mileage, plus refilling the gas tank. You do have to be careful because with gas prices at about $3 a gallon this can eat into your profit margin very quickly. I put a trailer hitch on my Honda CRV for less than $200 and rented a 4′x 8′ flatbed utility trailer for $20 a day. With trailers you don’t pay mileage or have to refill someone else’s gas tank! You can also purchase your own utility trailer for a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars, which is a lot cheaper than a new truck.
